About this area

We study how coastal structures behave under wave loading, using physical modelling and numerical simulation together. The group's output often goes straight into practice: breakwater cross-sections, harbour entrance layouts and beach nourishment schemes.

The Wave Flume is the backbone of this line. Cross-section models are built to scale in the 42-metre flume and loaded with irregular wave series; we measure armour displacement and overtopping discharge. On the numerical side we rebuild the same section and compare it against the measurement — where model and experiment disagree is usually where there is something to learn.

Sediment transport is the second focus. Along the Dardanelles and the Black Sea coastline we derive shoreline change from satellite image series and verify it with measurement campaigns. Separating which part of the erosion is natural cycle from which part follows structural intervention changes the design of the next intervention.

The group works under contract with municipalities and port operators; the datasets from that work go into open access to the extent that commercial confidentiality permits.
