This is the centre's highest-volume line by publication count. Three subjects run alongside each other: ship hydrodynamics, the emissions load of maritime transport, and navigational safety.

On the hydrodynamics side we solve hull resistance and manoeuvrability with computational fluid dynamics and verify against model experiments. Autonomous surface vehicles are the applied end of that work: the measurement platforms we build can collect data in shallow and narrow waters where a crewed cruise is expensive.

The emissions line rests on comparing fuel options across their whole life cycle. Options such as hydrogen and ammonia can look good on a tank-to-wake calculation and reverse on a well-to-wake one; the group's work here is among the centre's most cited output.

In navigational safety we derive collision risk in port approach channels from AIS records and develop risk assessment methods. The results are shared with port authorities.

The line is run jointly with the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Maritime Studies; student projects take a direct part in developing the measurement platforms.
